Surrealism and the Art of Imagination
Instructors: Tom Dodd and Paula Li
Students will enter the fascinating world of Surrealism, learn about some of the artists involved in the movement, examine works of art, and develop their own personal interpretations. The young artists will create original works based on the principles and techniques of artists such as Rene’ Magritte, Max Ernst, and Joan Miro’. Students will be encouraged to share their ideas, observations, and opinions verbally, and through spontaneous writing. This class will bring out the artist in everyone.
Tom Dodd earned his BFA, in Graphic Design, at the University of Kansas and his teaching degree at the University of Missouri. Until he moved to Vancouver last year, he taught for eleven years, full-time, in the Tucson Arizona Unified School District’s Gifted and Talented Program. In addition to teaching Gifted and Talented students, he has several years experience developing programs for At-Risk students. Tom is currently teaching in the Vancouver public system. He enjoys hiking, skiing, travelling, designing and building.
Paula Li has her BA from UBC, and volunteers at Madrona once a week. She has lots of experience working with children, and is fluent in Cantonese.
Please sign up for this class by email. janetlhamilton@shaw.ca. Include your child’s full name, age, grade, parents’ names, and emergency phone numbers. Please ensure that your child has a big, healthy breakfast before coming to class. If you have some old magazines at home that the children can cut up for their projects, please bring them along.
Parents and students are welcome to stay, socialize, and help clean up until 12:30. Please tell your friends about this because we want to raise as much money for Haiti as possible.
Please email us if you have any questions or concerns.
